Tropical Prints: In The Market

Though there were a plethora of pretty florals that came down the spring 2012 runways, it was the tropical prints that really caught our eye. Tacky hawaiian shirts, these are not: designers like Stella McCartney and Joseph Altuzarra showed dresses, skirts and tees in chic, technicolor fabrics that evoked a blossoming island paradise. It's a cool new look for spring, and a departure from the delicate pastel florals we've grown accustomed to during the season. Whether you wear them dressed up or dressed down, these tropical prints are a fresh new way to brighten up your wardrobe.

What im wearing; Rose Smith, model

Leather Panels

Everybody’s wearing a mix of textures with this weather and as every fashion fan knows, it’s a trend that’s far from fading. Adopted by models and fashion editors alike and seen on both high street and designer rails, it’s a favourite for many reasons. One, it’s perfect at toughening up wool coats and winter layers, two, it’s a trend that ticks as many practical boxes as it does style ones..I love the leather panels i bought one coat at Zara and im in love with it !

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK FALL 2012: ANKLES ARE THE NEW EROGENOUS ZONE.

Fashion Week has barely started and the trends are already starting to emerge. Well, re-emerge should we say, since trends seem to run fron season to season like watercolors that refuse to stay within the lines. At Steven Alan and Organic by John Patrick this morning, both designers had a real focus on -- wait for it -- the ankle.

Pants were cropped with just a touch of skin peeking out. Paired with patent-leather, laceup oxfords (my podiatrist will be so pleased!) there was something very sexy about these seemingly sweet looks. We spotted showgoers (even men!) going for the same look. We'll be taking this mini-trend for a test run ASAP. Check out our gallery below for looks from both the Steven Alan and Organic by John Patrick shows.

Watch the Marni For HM Video Directed by Sofia Coppola.

Sofia Coppola's highly anticipated Marni for H&M video has finally arrived. Starring Imogen Poots and set to Bryan Ferry's "Avalon," the film is filled with exactly the kinds of dreamy shots and lingering stares one would expect. "I wanted to do something artful that would represent Marni," Coppola explains. And so, Poots and a host of well-dressed friends drive through the palm-tree-filled countryside, lounge in the sun, and just generally enjoy the sweet life in Marrakesh. Watch the full version of the video here, then see below for a behind-the-scenes look at the shoot.

MADONNA HALFTIME SHOW:

Madonna did not disappoint.

The 53-year-old legend took the biggest stage in the world, the 2012 Super Bowl Halftime Show, and brought the house down. She dressed to impress, sporting a gold headdress, black thigh-high boots, a youthful pleated miniskirt, a black sequined robe and gold cheerleader pom-poms (not all at once, of course).
I died, obviously, to see that the opening number was "Vogue," featuring dozens of Vogue covers lit up across the stage.
Appropriately, Madonna didn't skimp on the high fashion, trotting around the multi-level stage in Givenchy Couture and Bulgari with little helpers M.I.A. and Nicki Minaj wearing Erickson Beamon headpieces. Her black liquid eyeliner looks flawless and her blond waves were perfectly in place.
But despite the expensive threads, Madonna was her old self: turning cartwheels, showing off her bejeweled panties, writhing on the ground before Cee-Lo Green (in head-to-toe black sequins, natch) and making us all forget there was even a football game in session.
Girl's still got it. Check out the epic, fashion-filled, black-and-gold extravaganza that was Madonna's Super Bowl halftime performance below.

CAN MODESTY AND MODELING MIX? ENTER NEW MUSLIM MODELING AGENCY. UNDERWRAPS.

Modeling and modesty are two words that seem mutually exclusive, but a Muslim fashion designer in New York City is trying to change that. A new agency for Muslim models, calledUnderwraps, is launching next week during New York Fashion Week. Its goal? To prove that models can be gorgeous, stylish, and yet still maintain their religious beliefs.
Nailah Lymus is an American-born Muslim whose parents converted to Islam before she was born. She adheres to the modesty tenets of the religion, which require that clothes be loose enough so as not to reveal your shape, and that basically the only body parts that can be visible are your face, hands and feet. Sound challenging? It doesn’t have to be. I chatted with Lymus this week about her background, Muslims in fashion, and her plans to launch a modeling agency.
Lymus is a self-taught designer who originally studied child development. While interning at a boutique, she ended up designing and selling some pieces there, and what was once a hobby suddenly got lucrative. She’s since made it a full time profession, and has turned her eye towards models. Specifically, Muslim models.
There historically haven’t been many well-known Muslim models in western fashion, but that may be changing. Lancôme just signed its first ever Muslim model, Hanaa Ben Abdesslem, who’s Tunisian. Abdesslem broke into the mainstream after debuting on Vivienne Westwood’s runway, and is signed with IMG. Abdesslem doesn’t have her head covered in photographs, and doesn’t seem to be adhering—at least in her professional life—to modesty standards, and Lymus acknowledged that it has to be that way to get recognition right now.

Underwraps' founder Nailah Lymus
“[Muslim models] come from a background where they dress Islamically appropriate, but to be in this industry and to be a model you kind of have to forfeit that,” Lymus said. “That’s why I wanted to start this agency, so you don’t have to do that. You don’t have to lose who you are to be in this business.”
To that end, she’s starting Underwraps as an agency for girls who are committed to maintaining modesty standards in their dress, but hope to work with mainstream designers. That’s Lymus’ long-term goal. “We take things seriously and are

professional just like other models. During fashion week I’ll be sending them out to castings just like anyone else,” she told me.
Right now Underwraps has four girls in development, who aren’t officially signed yet. She’ll bring them to industry events during fashion week and let them get a taste of the attention. Besides having a “look”, Lymus believes that the girls have to have strong personalites and be able to handle the pressures of the industry, and also the misconceptions. Especially since 9/11, there’s a lot of misunderstanding about Islam and its expectations of women. Lymus hopes to shatter the more common ones—like that women can’t work or that they have to wear full abayas.
Could an agency like this succeed? It would take a special girl, and an open-minded designer to make it happen. While runways featuring lots of bare skin tend to get attention, there are many designers who could theoretically use Muslim models. Haider Ackermann’s spring show, which featured layered looks and even veils, is one that comes to mind. Regardless of whether or not Underwraps is successful, we love that agencies featuring non-traditional models are trying to make a go of it.

JEAN PAUL GAULTIER SPRING 2012.

This week, The Fashionistyle takes on a look from Jean Paul Gaultier's controversial Amy Winehouse-inspired spring 2012 couture collection. Smokin'!

TODAY IM WEARING; SOLANGE KNOWLES.

''Love the print on these Tibi pants! Paired them with an Alexander Wang shirt...or dress...or "shress" if you may (I know they have a proper term for this - shirt-dress - but gotta admit "shress" is much more fun!), Dries Van Noten shoes, Aldo rings, and Illesteva glasses that I'm in love with.''

PYJAMA PARTY.

SEDUCTIVE, sensual and far too stylish to keep in the bedroom, pyjamas present an alluring new eveningwear option for spring.
Elegant PJ pants and dressing-gown jackets in slouchy silks and satins have a relaxed, after-hours glamour, while Stella McCartney's block-printed silky pyjamas offer a relaxed alternative to her traditional trouser suits.
Just don't forget to swap your slippers for heels.

ALLAIRE HEISIG, MODEL WHO CLOSED MARC BY MARC JACOBS

Not only did model Allaire Heisig walk for Marc by Marc Jacobs' fall 2011 the first time she hit the runway, she closed the show. At only 18-years-old, this Locust Valley, New York-native has achieved a feat that few models could dream of. Although she is only in her third season, Heisig is a star in the making. In addition to walking for Valentino Couture, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alberta Ferretti and Theyskens' Theory in the past year, she has also appeared in editorials for Vogue Italia and Virgine magazines. What's next for this new face? We'll just have to wait and see.

WATERCOLORS FOR WINTER: HOW TO WEAR IT.

There's no need to shun pretty florals from your winter wardrobe this season, especially when they come in the form of a watercolor print. It's a much more versatile floral that, when created in a painterly fashion like many of the spring 2012 runway looks from Erdem and Christopher Kane, can work any time of the year.
For example, we're loving Jessica Alba's playful take brightening up her look with pops of technicolor orange and green. And if the printed pant is too much for your taste, try a brushed pastel blouse or an abstract shift dress for a more toned down take on the trend. Whatever the case may be, an artful, winter watercolor print is definitely something to invest in now.
